If you have expertise regarding your industry, sharing it with the world in the form of white papers or articles is a good way to make your site more useful to visitors.

Search engines can't find your website if there are no links to it.

Some search engines, most notably Google, consider the number of links from other sites to yours as a factor in determining search result relevancy. Asking your distributors, suppliers, partners, and other contacts to link to your site is one way of increasing your "link popularity".
